The Maine Coon is the largest domestic cat breed and one of the oldest natural breeds in North America. Affectionate, intelligent, and famously dog-like, they are the perfect companion for families seeking a truly extraordinary feline.

Origin & History

The Maine Coon is the official state cat of Maine, where it developed naturally over centuries from working cats brought ashore by 17th-century seafarers. Their dense, water-resistant coats, tufted ears and feet, and bushy tails are all adaptations to the harsh New England climate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Maine Coons hypoallergenic?
No cat is truly hypoallergenic, but Maine Coons produce relatively normal levels of Fel d 1 protein. Some allergy sufferers tolerate them better than others — we recommend visiting a breeder before reserving.
Do Maine Coons get along with dogs?
Famously yes. Their dog-like temperament makes them one of the best breeds for multi-pet households when properly introduced.
How much grooming do they need?
Two to three brushings per week with a stainless-steel comb is usually sufficient. During spring and fall coat changes, daily brushing prevents matting.
Are polydactyl Maine Coons rare?
Polydactyly was historically common in working Maine Coons. Today it is less frequent and considered a desirable heritage trait by many enthusiasts.
